Administration in Morbi

Wellington Secretariat in Morbi

Until 15th August 2013, Morbi was just a taluka under the Rajkot administration. However, since the town was almost sixty-seven kilometer from the district headquarters, the inhabitance of this area had to face many difficulties. To ensure better accessibility to governmental services and to speed up development, it was decided that a separate Morbi district would be carved out of Rajkot District.

For that purpose, a special committee under the aegis of the Chief Secretary of Gujarat was formed. The committee studied the recommendations of the District Collectors and opinions of people at large before it forwarded its own recommendations the Chief Minister’s Office. Therefore, we see that creation of Morbi not only fulfilled an administrative need, but it also fulfilled the aspiration of the people of the region.

Talukas under Morbi District

Morbi district consists of five talukas or subdivisions. They are Morbi, Malia, Wankaner, Tankara and Halvad. Among them, Halvad previously belonged to Surendranagar district and the rest have been carved out of Rajkot. A part of Jamnagar district has also been added to Morbi. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in the Morbi city.

Court in Morbi

Since Morbi was a taluka or subdivision under Rajkot until quite recently, it has a Taluka court. Now that it has become a separate district, it is expected that the Taluka Court will soon be upgraded to a District and session Court. Till that time, the residents here has to travel to Rajkot for hearing of their cases. The city also has a jail of taluka level for detention of suspects. In short, although the city was just a sub-divisional headquarters until 2013, it has almost all the amenities required for administrative purpose.
