One Day Trips from Morbi
Morbi is located at a place where the Kutch meets Suarashtra region of Gujarat. Little Rann of Kachchh, which is home to the Asiatic Wild Ass and other species of wild life, lies to the north of the district. Other than that, the Rajkot District lies to its south, Jamnagar to its west and Sundernagar to its east. All these places have been ruled by different dynasties. The kings here had attributed much to the cultural and architectural development of the area. Consequently, these places have number historical edifices that may interest visitors and locals alike. However, let us start our one day trip from Morbi with a visit to Tankara, which in the beginning of the nineteenth century, was an obscure village.
Tankara - the birth place of Dayanad SaraswatiTankara, located in the Morbi District, is a birthplace of the great Hindu reformist Dayanand Saraswati. He was the founder of Arya Samaj. He was born in this town (then an obscure village) on 12 February, 1824. The town has many places associated with his memory. The house in which he was born still stands today. What is more, utensils used by him have been preserved till date. His book of Vedas has also been kept safe under a glass case. His life has also been portrayed through series of pictures. Beside the house, there are also a yagnashala and a cowshed located in the vicinity.
Halvad, Wankaner and DhrangadhraHalvad and Wankaner are also located in the Morbi district. While Halvad is around 46.1 Km from Morbi, Wankaner is located at a distance of 31. 9 Km. Both these cities are historically important and are dotted with ancient temples and palaces.
Another important fact about Halvad is that if you wish to visit Little Runn of Kutch from Morbi, you will have to travel via Halvad. The famous Wild Ass Sanctuary is located at a distance of 20 Km from Halvad. The sanctuary is also reachable via Dhrangadhra of Sundernagar District from Morbi. However, in that case too, one has to travel via Halvad. Moreover, in such case, the distance may turn out to be a little longer. While Dhrangadhra is 78.6 Km from Morbi, Little Runn of Kutch is another sixteen kilometer.
However, Dhrangadhra also has many places of tourist interest. This city, which was established in 1090, also has many interesting palaces and temples. Therefore, a one-day trip to Dhrangadhra will be equally interesting.
Wild Life Sanctuary of Rann of Kutch
Little Rann of Kutch, also known as Little Desert of Kutch, is actually a salt marsh. Although the area may seem a little too bleak to many, it has a beauty of its own. Moreover, it is the last refuge of the Asiatic Wild ass, which is locally known as the Khur. Animals like Nilgai, Indian wolf and desert fox as well as many species of reptiles can also be found here. However, what make it more interesting are the migratory and local birds that have chosen this bleak spot as their home. Flamingoes, ducks, cranes, pelicans, sandgrouse, Indian Bustard, francolins etc are found in plenty here and so this spot is also a favorite for ornithologist. Salt panning has traditionally been the main commercial activity of this region.
Rajkot in the SouthRajkot is located at a distance of 67 Km from Morbi. It was the district headquarters of the entire region until a separate district of Morbi was carved out of Rajkot District in 2013. Most of the interstate trains stop at Rajkot. Moreover, the nearest airport is also located here.
Apart from Rajkot, there are many other interesting cities located near Morbi. Jamnagar for instance is located at a distance of 101 Km from Morbi and will take barely two hours to drive down. Therefore, one can easily camp at Morbi and tour around the area enjoying the heritage of Gujarat.
